West Berlin Scenes

Four decades of photographs by Harry Croner

Press photographer Harry Croner (1903–1992) and his camera captured life in the half-city of West-Berlin for 40 years: urban reconstruction, the emergence of new landmarks, mayor and minor everyday occurrences, prominent personalities from the cultural and political fields and in particular events on the city’s many stages.
Whether at the six-day races, a beauty contest, a fashion show, film festival or press ball – Croner was there. His photographs chronicle an epoch and pay homage simultaneously to a small island of world politics that was one thing more than anything else: a remarkable cultural stage.
